Throughout the course of my dementia reality, my songwriting creativity and process has been an ever-changing thing. Up until 2023, I had never written an instrumental, and now that’s almost all I compose. I used to write lyrics, lots and lots of lyrics, putting out 3-4 verse-plus-a-bridge songs on a regular basis. When I was first diagnosed, I wrote a series of songs with lyrics that all dealt with “saying goodbye,” like “Be Home Soon,” “I’ll Be There With You,” and “To Get Next To You.” Then, after discovering I could express myself musically without words, I wrote a few songs, like “A Thing That Lasts,” “For This Reason,” and “I’m Still Here” that were mostly instrumental, but with a lyrical chorus. Then, along came this song: “So Much More To Say.” And after I wrote it, I didn’t write any lyrics for about 18 months – meaning, I guess, that I really didn’t have much more to say at all!
Lyrically, it’s a hard song to hear, but I’m hoping you’ll push through. It’s pretty raw and has no identifiable rhyme scheme. It’s melancholy, but the last verse is an ode to my loving and sweet partnership with Gina. Ron de la Vega, who usually shows up on cello, plays a lovely bass part, and Fett’s powerful keyboard work ties it all together.

Lyrics:
Verse 1:
Sometimes a word slips
Or it disappears
Or a whole thought
Becomes less clear
Verse 2:
But I try hard
To get the track back
‘Cuz if I let it go
It might be gone for good
Chorus 1:
So how do I explain how the world seems to me now
The days go by at lightning speed
And where I’m at now may not last
But I’ve so much more to say
Verse 3:
But there are some days
When I can do things
When I can do things
Even better than before
Verse 4:
I couldn’t do this
I couldn’t play my tunes
I couldn’t sing my words
Chorus 2:
So how do I explain how the world seems to me now
The days and weeks go by at blinding speed
And where I’m at now may not last
But I’ve so much more to say
Instrumental break
Verse 5:
So we’ll keep on
Like we always do
‘Cuz that’s what we do
When the hard parts come
Verse 6:
And there’ll be good days
And there’ll be bad days
But I’m for lots of days
To spend with you
Chorus 3:
So have I explained well enough how the world seems to me now
The spent days fall gently to the ground
What we’ve got here may not last
But I’ve so much more to say
I’ve so much more to say
I’ve so much more to say
To you
